INAUGURAL
YEAR

2022 was the inaugural year of programming for Lamplight Women’s Literacy. It was our privilege to join with students as they worked hard and made progress toward their goals for themselves and their families.

STUDENT ENROLLMENT
AT A GLANCE

  • 100% low income (household incomes less than 80% of Average Median Income)

  • 73% women, 27% men

  • Age distribution: 

             13% ages 20-29

             35% ages 30-39

             35% ages 40-49

             17% ages 50-81 

  • Countries of origin: Algeria, Brazil, Egypt, Ethiopia, Greece, Haiti, Kalmykia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Turkey, Uganda, Venezuela (*Brazil being the largest country of origin at 32%) 

  • 13 different languages spoken

  • 100% incredible people!

ACCOMPLISHMENTS

Piloted a free English Language program for low-income Arlington residents 

  • Two levels offered: beginner and intermediate

  • In-person classes

  • Daytime & evening options

  • Each course met once per week at program kick-off and expanded to twice per week (3 hours instruction weekly) by Fall 2022

  • Total number of students served:  23  

  • Enrollment between first and third sessions grew from 6 to 13 students with half of students re-enrolling for subsequent sessions

  • 100% of student course evaluations said they would recommend the class to a friend 

Piloted a free TEAS Test Prep program for health care workers

  • Awarded grant funding through the Town of Arlington’s Transformative Growth Grant

  • Developed a 12-week, 36 hour course to prepare Certified Nursing Assistants and home health aides for success on the English portions of the TEAS exam which is needed for nursing school admissions

  • Began first cohort of TEAS test prep course with 4 students in December

Built business systems to support first year of operations 

  • Improved website to include multilingual information, online registration, and student class pages

  • Developed collaborative relationships with local area social service providers
