English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL)

Lamplight's ESOL program advances students' English speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills. Our curriculum is interactive, fun, and comprehensive. Lessons are taught by expert teachers with years of experience. Attention is given to students' individual learning needs to ensure that every student makes progress.

Students in Lamplight's ESOL program also have access to career advising, job search assistance, and referrals for other social service needs.

Winter Session Dates: January 6, 2025 - March 13, 2025  

Levels/Days/Times:

  • Low Beginner: Tuesdays & Thursdays, 6:00 - 7:30pm

  • High Beginner: Tuesdays & Thursdays, 7:00 - 8:30pm

  • Intermediate: Mondays & Wednesdays, 7:00 - 8:30pm

Locations: 

  • Arlington Housing Authority, Menotomy Manor, 2 Fremont Ct., Arlington, MA

  • Arlington EATS, 117 Broadway, Arlington, MA 

Student commitment: Students must be able to attend all classes and complete a half hour of homework per class.

Cost: Free

Eligibility: Lamplight's ESOL program supports the economic mobility of people who are employed or underemployed in entry level jobs and have limited incomes below 80% of Average Median Income (AMI). Students must also live or work in Arlington, Cambridge, Medford, Somerville or Waltham.

For Certified Nursing Assistants and Patient Care workers

Pre-TEAS and TEAS Prep for Certified Nursing Assistants

​This series of free courses helps health care workers with intermediate English skills take the next step in their journey toward nursing school admissions. Students will learn the academic reading and writing skills tested by the TEAS exam, starting from a more foundational level. The TEAS exam is an admissions requirement for nursing programs that can be a barrier to nonnative English speaking applicants. 

Note: Presently, this series focusses on the TEAS reading & writing subtests. Students will still need further study to prepare for the TEAS science & math subtests.

Courses offered: 

  • Pre-TEAS Skill Prep (Part I) for Certified Nursing Assistants

  • Pre-TEAS Skill Prep (Part II) for Certified Nursing Assistants

  • TEAS Skill Prep for Certified Nursing Assistants

Dates:      

  • Pre-TEAS Skill Prep (Part I): September - November 2024

  • Pre-TEAS Skill Prep (Part II): January - March 2025

  • TEAS Skill Prep: April - June 2025 

Days/Times: Mondays and Wednesdays, 9:30-11:30am or 7:00-9:00pm (depending on enrollment)

Location: Virtual class, Online*

*Students must connect to class using a computer not a phone. Phones will not work for class reading, writing, and learning activities.

Student commitment: Students must be able to attend all classes and complete 1 hour of homework per class.

Cost: Free.

Eligibility:

  • Certified Nursing Assistants or people employed in patient care who seek to advance in their health care careers 

  • Participants must have intermediate English reading and writing skills. Placement tests will be given.
